26 “And when a man smites the eye of his male or female servant and destroys it, he is to let him go free for the sake of his eye. 27 “And if he knocks out the tooth of his male or female servant, he is to let him go free for the sake of his tooth. – Exodus 21:26 – 27
If a master causes permanent physical damage (not just an eye or a tooth) to a servant then the servant is set free for sake of the injury. This kept masters from treating servant too harshly because they did not want to lose the property for which they had paid.
