15 “And he who smites his father or his mother shall certainly be put to death. – Exodus 21:15
Death may seem a little harsh for this action; however, when we look at the Hebrew word for smite, Nakah, it means to strike, smite, hit, beat, slay, or kill. So many of us read smite as “hit”, but it could be much more fatal than just a good punch to the jaw. It is doubtful a son or daughter would be put to death for just hitting a parent, so this punishment of death is likely reserved for the beating and/or slaying of a parent.
