Cursing A Parent

17 “And he who curses his father or his mother shall certainly be put to death. – Exodus 21:17

Death seems pretty harsh for just cursing at your parents.  This word does not mean saying  mean things or cussing as we would think of in the Western World.  It is derived from the Hebrew word Galal which means to make worthless or treat something or someone as worthless; to be slight, be swift, be trifling, be of little account, be light.  It could also be taken as disgracing someone or cursing (a prayer or invocation for harm or injury to come upon one) them. So either way in this verse when a child curses or disgraces a parent or acts as if they are worthless, its a little more than what you would initially read from our Western mindset.
