20 “And when a man smites his male or female servant with a rod, so that he dies under his hand, he shall certainly be punished. 21 “But if he remains alive a day or two, he is not punished; for he is his property. – Exodus 21:20 – 21
This law is not as clear or fair as some of the others because it does not define the punishment to the master nor does it require punishment if the servant dies a week later from the blow. However, it is worded well enough to hold the hand of most masters due to the gamble the master would take in striking servants to the point of possibly killing them. The master has to consider if beating his servants is worth the chance it may kill them.
